UV rays are strongest from 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m., so you want to play it safe during this time and take exra precautions. Keep Babies in a Cool Place.Babies up to 12 months old should shy away from direct sunlight. Bring along a stroller with a hood. You may also want to consider netting as the warm weather attracts pesty flies. You'll find many parents covering their babies' buggies with light blankets to keep the pests away. Turn on the air conditioner. Hotel room temperatures should remain cool. And, keep the air conditioner on in the car. Also, consider placing a shade on car windows to prevent direct sunlight. If you're headed for the beach, consider purchasing an umbrella for a nominal fee; or decide to recline on the grass under a shady tree. Also, remember, beach conditions change often, so check frequently for temperature and humidity readings. Make Sure you Pack Along the Essentials. Pack loose-fitting cotton clothing for easy air circulation and to avoid rashes. Hats are a must in Australia. Everyone wears one - from grannies to hipsters-so don't think twice about taking along a few for the little ones. They're a must-have to protect their faces, ears, nose, necks and lips. Sunglasses. Hollywood kids may wear them to look cool, but in Australia kids wear sunglasses to protect their eyes. While it may be too much for babies under one, you will find toddlers wearing them for the same reason you wear them: for UVA and UVB protection. Sunscreen. It may be best to test against reactions before you lather your baby in sunscreen. PABA and alcohol-free lotions make be best for their sensitive skin. Choose one with a SPF 30-plus for optimum protection. Apply liberally as even when its cloudy, the rays of the sun are known to be strong. Be prepared for Bites, Stings, Cuts or Burns.Insect Repellent. It's always wise to test before applying repellents on babies and toddlers. Spray-on may be easier to apply during the day, and remember to wash off at night before bedtime. Babies and toddlers are also prone to ticks, so bring along alcohol and purchase a pair of tweezers. First-aid Kit. You can purchase one from the local chemist. It should include antiseptic creams or gels, hand-cleaning gel, bandages and dressing.
